The Fall of a Star

Writer's picture: Julius McQuackusJulius McQuackus

An adaptation of a Mafia night narration.

A short story you now shall hear,

A tragedy to tell.

A tale I’ve seen, ending quite sad

And you shall see as well.

The dawn of great nineteen hundred;

The land: unrivaled France.

Two doves, unmet, became good friends

And both held wealth expanse.

These two were but two of some twelve,

Who massed, but non aware.

A huge event did bring them to,

The glorious World Fair.

Now these odd twelve, that you should know,

Had special properties.

The first man was an officer,

Who shyed before a sneeze.

Then after him an inventor,

Tobias Friedrich.

This German man was of the two,

And he could stop time's tick.

Another man, was there here too,

His name, Norman Albright.

He took invisibility

That choice he made Alright.

And finally, Celestia Yeun.

A lady, passing fair,

This artist was the second dove,

Who made lights like a flare.

The two of friends who walked one night,

The doves in the fresh air,

Were startled by Norman Albright,

Who ran right through the fair.

Words of warning were exchanged there,

For they were in danger.

Confusing times were had before,

This night was yet stranger.

They followed down to the shipyard,

To reach a floating boat.

To escape from one chasing them,

Before they would get smote.

But they were slow and trouble swift;

Their pursuer they feared.

The air did drop ninety degrees,

Normally that's quite weird.

The Frosty one, her name shall be,

Made such some snow pour down

That curiosity strove now;

Snow was unheard in town.

The pair of birds yet clasped each hand,

And thanks to Friedrich,

Father time did pause his working;

A very handy trick.

The sounds did freeze almost at once,

And snow stayed in the air.

A shining sight from droplet's light,

A true beauty right there.

As they did walk through time and snow,

No one could make a glance.

Nothing they did leave behind there,

But footprints in the trance.

Eventually they did find one,

With all the time at hand,

Who caused the snow from a distance,

And brought strife to the land.

It was a she, in a large boat,

With hair flaming like fire.

It was more red then darkest blood,

Or wine, if you desire.

From her did fall a cold aura,

And outstretched was her palm.

To talk to her was their own goal,

Assured it would be calm.

The man would swap and leave the lass,

Alone in normal time,

To discuss with Red was his plan;

That can not be a crime.

It happened just as he did say,

At least for the first blink.

Unfortunately he did fail,

Red did not stop to think.

The man flew back, trapped to the wall,

Ice shards formed up his brace,

His partner could not move to help,

Her feet frozen in place.

Red’s attention was drawn aside;

By cold extremities.

A shiver and then Yuen did say:

“We're not your enemies!”

A loud noise from out-ship was heard

The clamor was bizarre

With not much time left Red replied

“I do know what you are!"

And slowly did the foe-friend move,

Approaching with ice shards,

But a new form hit her in head,

Had there not been a guard?

The figure stood in the doorway,

A human form ink-dark,

With knife in hand as Red did fall.

Again, loud booms did arc.

This time not all were past the ship,

Her mind in fight or flight,

Now Yuen controlled the wrath of stars:

The room filled with blazed light.

The shadow could not bear the force,

And fast did it dwindle.

With it cornered Yuen wished to see

Them who did her swindle.

It was now plain, shadow all gone,

And lo it was a girl!

A scared young lass who held a knife,

A knife she just might hurl.

Celestia did quick back-step,

And Red did slowly rise

She froze the girl, hatred hair-hot,

Now her foes are allies.

Friederick did then say some words,

But Yuen could not listen.

The knife captured in glassy ice,

Blood-stained, it did glisten.

Then from a daze she then awoke,

Where? When? She could not tell.

The knife was gone, drawn from ice-sheath,

And Tobias did yell.

The shadow girl now stood, quite free,

With knife pressed to his throat.

Lass had Tobias now at gasps,

When Yuen had just her smote.

He stuttered that she ignores time

And things did then make sense.

The girl had bidded ‘til he paused,

And then went on offense.

The defense began to bargain,

But they had not ransom.

Until a noise quite deafening

Made all ears ring handsome

Somewhere not here, but not quite far,

An officer did duck.

And with the cruel hand of Fortune,

Unprepared Yuen was struck.

The blast came from a wretched gun

Held behind Freiderick.

As Yuen’s ear-pain did slowly fade,

A new kind came quite quick.

A place under her collarbone,

Had been pierced with a hole,

A crimson spot, a fatal shot,

She felt her fading soul.

The Shadow girl threw down her gun,

Above her stood Albright.

On both her form and gun, did shine

A duel Electric Light.

And Tobias was saved from her,

As rescued by one friend,

But now it was almost too late,

For Yuen was near her end.

The Shadow jumped to the river

Her life she did defend,

But he did not care about that

For Yuen was near her end.

Red had stood by, a quiet form

For help she could not lend,

But he did not care about that

For Yuen was near her end.

Celestia, shot through the flesh

Quite calm, she did pretend.

And he did much care about that

For Yuen, he could not mend.
