Hour 42

Writer's picture: Julius McQuackusJulius McQuackus

For our guide was sunlight given.

To track our times and days,

To set waking hours and rests,

It rains down all its rays.

But rules are but suggestions here,

Though many will deny,

And those that do rest all their day,

When others work they lie.

Farmers, it's true, wake before dawn,

And set far after dusk.

But sometimes you need a small boost,

Not constant, but a must.

The bill to future wellbeing,

Is never fully read.

So choose, therefore, stay up all night

Instead of goin' to bed.

There are many reasons for why,

Causes for lack of sleep,

And here they are listed for you,

As though I'm counting sheep.

Deadlines for work, and school, and life,

Are notley pushed later,

But when they're nigh at your own head,

You work, or form a traitor.

So thus you borrow time from rest,

And finish your project,

But if it weren't for production,

Many would then object.

One why, more true than all the rest,

Exists honour and pride.

To thus ignore sleep for its sake,

Your word and will is tried.

The fulfillment of a statement,

One made in confidence,

Not turned from in the darkest hour,

With waning consciousness,

Shows all the more thy strength of will,

And proves thy word is true.

And then, thy know when thee speak truth,

And thus proves what thee knew.

Else how can you trust your own word,

In matters holding weight,

When faced with slightest temptation,

You did not hesitate?

Of this there is but one sure goal,

To prove as much you may.

And how else best to achieve this,

Then prove more than one day?

And to that end was this written,

Forty-two hours from dawn,

Formed but from in mindless boredom,

Purely to kill the yawn.

To strive a goal and set a time,

To which one focuses,

And to thus fail and turn away,

Poor sleep rewards your bonuses.

I say not that you should do this,

Perhaps—aye, you should not.

But if nor else your will you test,

Your very word will rot.
