In God We Trust?
We see it every day. On license plates, our money and it engraved above all who enter the state of the union. In God We Trust.
In the American government, we have put our priorities in useless places. We claim it is in God’s name that we trust, but by our actions, that certainly doesn't seem to be the case. We see today and throughout history, we have veered further and farther away from trusting in God. Mankind has constantly wanted to be like God to put their own lives into their own hands, but we learn in Genesis what becomes of that: “The Fall.” With that being the case, we desperately yearn to be in the power of our livelihood to make every precise detail in our lives, and for this to be the motto for an entire country was an interesting thing to do.
Why was “In God we trust” selected to be the official motto of our nation? It was designated in 1956 by Eisenhower and reverend Billy Graham. These two men chose this motto during the cold war to distinguish themselves from the soviet union. Both men, being of the Christian faith (Eisenhower and Graham), thought it best to choose something that they stood for personally, and wanted their citizens to stand for.
The 50s were seen as “Power years for religion.” Now, we hardly have sound religions or morals at all. Between the concoctions of religions, people have created astrology, astronomy, cosmology, and countless others to practise a religion that feels good to us. Religions that seem to bear no consequences in this world
With this being said, out of all the leaders of America throughout history, why have only ten claimed to be Christian? We have put in power people who do not trust in the Almighty God.
These thirty-five words were written by John Adams to secure the role of the presidency: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." Do not secure that it is in God’s name they will rule this broken country.
Instead of trusting in God, we have placed our trust in obstinate men. In the president, in the governors, in the representatives and senators, and in the mayors. We have placed our trust in people who do not see the full picture, people who do not know the future, people without unshakable faith.
The pledged words that were carefully selected and thought worthy of this country have inevitably died. The meaning of “In God we trust” scarcely retains weight, and is thrown around aimlessly. This is changeable. This can be reversed. If we were to elect individuals who believed what was right, took heed to the meaning of such words, and put love above all else, then our nation would take a turn and begin to once again reflect the values we hold so dear. It wouldn’t be perfect, but it would be better. In God, we would trust once more.
